Education in Spain

Admission, degree recognition and immigration status are three parallel processes. They are linked by the calendar, but none of them replaces another.

Read in order

First you choose the level and language of study, then you check recognition of prior education and admission deadlines. The visa is assembled around an already concrete study path.

When the routemakes sense

  • A child needs a public, concertado or private school.
  • A bachelor's, master's or vocational programme is planned.
  • A school certificate or diploma needs to be recognised.
  • A language course is considered part of the relocation.
  • The programme is taught in Spanish, a regional language or English.
01

The education level determines the procedure

For a school, what matters is age, address, the regional language and availability of places. For a bachelor's degree, homologación of the school certificate and an entrance procedure may be required. A master's programme often decides independently, but asks for academic documents and proof of language.

Vocational education and regulated professions have their own rules. Recognition of a diploma's level does not always grant the right to work in a licensed field.

02

Language must be checked with the specific programme

In Catalonia, Valencia, the Basque Country and other regions, part of the teaching is in a co-official language. An English-language programme may require IELTS or TOEFL, a Spanish-language one may require DELE, SIELE or an internal exam.

A language school used as grounds for study must meet the applicable accreditation and format requirements. Calling a course "intensive" proves nothing.

03

Three calendars are brought into one

Admission, homologación and the immigration application have different timelines. Documents are ordered so that the enrolment decision does not expire and the certificates reach the consulate in time.

For a family with children it is useful to check housing, the school zone, medical coverage and the support language in parallel — not after arrival, but before signing the contract.

A working set ofdocuments

Not a universal list but a framework. The exact set depends on your nationality, the place of filing, your family and the facts of your case.

The order of work

Each next step begins only after the previous one has been verified.

  1. 01

    Goal

We define the level, field, language, budget and preferred city.

  2. 02

    Recognition

We check whether homologación, equivalencia or a separate licence is needed.

  3. 03

    Applications

We build a list of programmes and work to their real deadlines.

  4. 04

    Enrolment

We obtain the decision, meet the conditions and confirm payment.

  5. 05

    Relocation

We synchronise study status, housing, school, insurance and entry.

Where a case breaks

01

The deadline has already passed

A Spanish administrative procedure does not speed up just because the academic year is about to start.

02

The regional language is not taken into account

The school and university reality can differ from the language of the advertising page.

03

Homologación is called a licence

For a regulated profession, recognition of a diploma may be only the first step.

Short answers

If the answer changes with a single fact, that is not a detail — it is a reason to review the situation separately.

01Can I apply after the 11th grade?

Yes, but the path depends on the country of the school certificate, the chosen university, homologación and the entrance procedure.

02Doesn't a private university require homologación?

Some private programmes decide by their own rules, but this does not cancel the state requirements regarding the status of the diploma or a regulated profession.

03Does any Instituto Cervantes school grant a visa?

Accreditation matters, but they also check the duration, format, intensity, payment and the current rules of the place of application.

04Can a child attend a public school?

With the appropriate status and registration, the family applies under the rules of the autonomous community and municipality; the school is often tied to the address zone.
