Non-Lucrative Residence Permit
A residence for living in Spain on your own means without any work or professional activity. The main question here is not the size of a single statement, but the stability and transparency of the resources.
Read in orderNo Lucrativa suits those who genuinely do not need to work during the first residence period. Trying to call active remote work "passive income" creates a risk at the very foundation of the route.
When the routemakes sense
- You have savings or stable income that does not require you to work.
- You are ready to live in Spain and follow the rules for keeping the residence.
- A career break, retirement or living off capital is planned.
- There are sufficient funds for the family for the entire declared period.
- Full medical coverage can be arranged in Spain.
The residence is built around the absence of work
This status allows residence, but not work or professional activity. The dossier must therefore show both sufficient funds and the absence of any need to earn them in Spain.
The consulate assesses more than the balance on the statement date. What matters is the origin of the money, the availability of funds, the banking history and consistency with the application form. Rental income, dividends, pension and capital are confirmed by different documents.
The financial threshold is a formula, not a fixed sum
The law ties the funds to IPREM: 400% of the monthly indicator for the main applicant and 100% for each accompanying relative. That is why a fixed figure from an old article quickly becomes outdated.
Besides finances, you usually need a passport, a criminal record certificate, a medical certificate and insurance from a company authorised to operate in Spain. Foreign public documents are translated and legalised under the applicable rules.
The first year must be planned together with the renewal
After obtaining the visa, the applicant enters within the set term and arranges the TIE. Renewal will again require resources, insurance and compliance with the conditions of the status.
Prolonged actual residence may lead to tax residency. This is not a flaw of the programme but a separate consequence that is better calculated before relocating.
A working set ofdocuments
Not a universal list but a framework. The exact set depends on your nationality, the place of filing, your family and the facts of your case.

We compute the funds by IPREM and decide which documents confirm them.
- 03

We obtain certificates in the right sequence, translate and legalise them.
- 04
Visa and entry
We track the deadlines for the decision, obtaining the visa and the actual entry.
- 05
TIE and calendar
We arrange the card and note in advance the key dates of the future renewal.
Where a case breaks
Remote work is hidden
If the actual activity diverges from the basis, the problem is not solved by wording in the application form.
The money appeared before filing
An unexplained top-up raises questions about the origin and real availability of the funds.
Insurance with exclusions
A cheap tourist policy usually does not replace the medical coverage required for residence.
Short answers
If the answer changes with a single fact, that is not a detail — it is a reason to review the situation separately.
01Can I work for a foreign company?
The No Lucrativa basis is built on residence without any work or professional activity. For remote work the digital nomad route is usually examined.
02Do I have to buy housing?
No, the programme itself does not require buying property. The consulate may request a clear housing plan or proof of address.
03Can I change the status later?
The law provides for modification of permits when the conditions of a new basis are met. Such a transition is planned in advance, not after the card expires.
04Is the amount in the account the same every year?
No. The threshold is tied to IPREM and family composition, so it is recalculated at the moment of filing.
