Study and long-term stay

The basis starts not with a visa but with a suitable programme. The study format, accreditation, payment and admission calendar determine whether an immigration dossier can be assembled at all.

Read in order

The new system after 20 May 2025 distinguishes higher education, post-secondary schooling and other study or training programmes. The universal advice from the old article no longer works.

When the routemakes sense

  • There is enrolment in a recognised full-time or permissible hybrid programme.
  • The study lasts more than 90 days and falls under a provided-for category.
  • Payment, living funds and insurance are confirmed by documents.
  • The calendar allows applying in advance rather than after classes begin.
  • The post-graduation plan is aligned with options for renewal or modification.
01

First the programme is classified

Higher education, post-secondary schooling, language training, professional programmes and volunteering are not regulated entirely alike. The category determines the place of filing, the right to work, family accompaniment and renewal.

For non-university programmes the share of in-person attendance matters. University-based language courses have received separate clarifications, while programmes at private schools are checked against their own accreditation.

02

The calendar matters more than a nice enrolment letter

The application is filed with a margin before study begins. Payment, certificates, insurance, housing, translations and the term of legal stay must be synchronised. For a number of applications inside Spain there is a requirement to have a sufficient remaining legal period.

Living funds are counted by IPREM and are not mixed with tuition cost. With sponsorship you show not only the letter but also the relationship, the sponsor's means and the real movement of money.

03

Work and family are rights with conditions

Permissible work must be compatible with study and not exceed the set limit. For higher education the authorisation may include work automatically; in other cases the procedure differs.

The family does not always receive the same scope of rights as the student. After study ends various transitions are possible, but they require a new basis and timely filing.

A working set ofdocuments

Not a universal list but a framework. The exact set depends on your nationality, the place of filing, your family and the facts of your case.

Where a case breaks

01

Wrong course category

The name "academy" or "master's" does not by itself prove the programme's status.

02

Filing too late

Even a complete package cannot fix the calendar if the decision physically does not arrive by the start of study.

03

Work crowds out study

Exceeding the limit or an incompatible job can put the study basis at risk.

Short answers

If the answer changes with a single fact, that is not a detail — it is a reason to review the situation separately.

01Can you study online?

A fully remote programme usually does not create a suitable basis. For certain categories a hybrid format with a set share of in-person study is permissible.

02Can you work?

For provided-for programmes work is allowed up to 30 hours a week if it is compatible with study. The specific scope of the right depends on the category of authorisation.

03Can the family apply together?

For some programmes and situations this is possible. The rights of accompanying members and the filing procedure differ from the resident-family regime.

04Do study years count toward citizenship?

Study stay and residence are different legal statuses. For citizenship by residence, study years usually do not count as ordinary residence.
